Excellent for Martinis or strong Margaritas! : Margaritaville Chillin' Pour Liquor Chiller
I have umm, field tested, this liquor chiller twice. It has passed both times, I think. I was a little fuzzy the next morning.
First off this is a pretty cool looking machine. Everybody that came over commented on it and hung around it, checking it out, while they got their first drinks, then stood near it admiring it while they sipped away at said drink. Sure its a gadget, but its cool.
Now on to my testing. Both times I used this machine I placed the alcohol in the freezer for a while first. The liquor chiller will get room temp concoctions down to perfect chill in 2-4 hours, depending on what you consider perfect, 32 degrees, or 15 degrees, and depending on what room temp means at your house. If you keep the alcohol in your freezer, perfect for me, takes about ten minutes, then you are ready for the rest of the night. Unless its a bigger group, then you may need to refill the storage tank once, twice, or more. That is where using your freezer really pays off.
The first test was Martinis. Vodka Martinis. I used Sobieski Vodka and some dry vermouth. I had some side bowls with skewered olives, lemon twists, and a small glass of the olive juice because my wife likes "dirty martinis". The drinks came out excellent! They were very cold, which is required, but since we did not have to use ice in the martini we got the full flavors of the drink undiluted by melting ice. If you are a big martini fan, you need one of these machines.
The second test run featured Margaritas. We ended up making two batches of these, they were that good! The first batch I used Sauza Tres Generaciones Anejo Tequila, my favorite tequila, until I hit the Powerball and can afford to buy Don Julio 1942 Tequila. I squeezed in the juice of a few of fresh limes, then hit it with a splash of club soda, then poured it into the machine. I had some lime wedges in a plate to rub on the rim of the glass and some salt to dip the glass into for my friends that like salted Margaritas. I personally do not use the salt because I think it takes away from the Margarita, but it is popular so I provided it.
The first batch of Margaritas was excellent! I am a huge Margarita fan so I know they will get made often and of many different variations while I spend the rest of my life on my quest for the perfect Margarita. Its a tough life, but somebody has to do it.
Since the first batch went so quickly I had to mix up a second batch of Margaritas. I did not have enough of the Sauza left, so I switched the tequila to 1800 Silver tequila. Personally I preferred the Sauza margaritas, but the 1800 Margaritas were still very good.
Set-up, operation, and clean up of the machine are all very easy. Put the trays in place, pour in your concoction, plug it in and wait for it to get cold if you have not used freezing cold ingredients in the first place. Operation is simple. Place your glass under the spout and push down the handle until you get the amount of drink you desire. Clean up is as simple as running some soapy water through the machine, then clear water, then just wipe down the surfaces with a clean, damp cloth and let it dry. You really cannot get much simpler than that.
This is the perfect toy for you if you host a lot of parties. I am going to bring it to my next "game night" which should make the night even more fun. You can read about that in my review of [[ASIN:B0028IWDH0 Cranium]] and the marital problems it causes, and don't forget to check the pictures and see my cool Cranium cake. The other reason to buy one of these machines is to give as a gift for a friend that happens to throw a lot of parties. That friend will not be disappointed.
One more note, this is a liquor chiller, not a drink mixing and dispensing machine. Since it gets so cold, you need to mix your concoctions on the stiff side so your mix does not freeze into a huge block of ice. It also takes a while to get the drinks to the optimum temperature, so you really need to keep your drink mix in the freezer, especially if you are using it outdoors on a hot day.
